Grocery price alerts Australia: pick the lines that matter
The quick answer: put your staples in favourites, keep price alerts for the lines that actually move, and open Today's deals before you leave home. All three feed one shopping list.
We make Discount Trolley, so the bias is obvious. Search current prices, read ordinary unit prices, check Today's deals, save favourites, set price alerts and keep your list, then compare stores live, check price history and let Smart Swap suggest a cheaper comparable pack. Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, IGA, Harris Farm, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse where data is available. Not affiliated with those stores. The shelf can differ from the screen. Live prices need a connection.
This is not the weekly tracking guide. That one already lives at track grocery prices with a watchlist. This post is about the three tools that work together every shop: favourites, price alerts and Today's deals.
- Today's deals, one list, favourites and price alerts work together.
- Save favourites for repurchases, not every special.
- Price alerts is the feature name. This guide does not claim a push or a phone ping.
Favourites: the staples you buy again
Favourites are for the lines you repurchase without thinking. Milk, bread, coffee, the shampoo you already trust. On a product page in Discount Trolley you will see Favourite next to Add to list. Tap Favourite on the Pantene you actually buy, not on every shiny special.
Keep the favourites list honest. If you would not buy it again next month, it does not need a favourite.
On the home screen, Favourites sits beside Deals, Stores and Recent. On My List, a Favourites tab sits next to Shopping Lists. Use that tab to reopen staples without rebuilding the basket from scratch.
- Favourite the exact product you repurchase, not every special.
- Prune favourites you have stopped buying.
- Reopen staples from the Favourites tab on My List.
Price alerts: save them for the lines that move
Price alerts are for the lines whose price moves enough that you care. Put them on staples that swing, not on one-off treats.
Price alerts is the feature name in the product text. This guide does not claim the app sends a push, a phone notification or a ping when a favourite goes on sale. Open the app, check your alerts and Today's deals, then shop.
Not sure an item deserves an alert? Reopen it from Recently Viewed, check the price again, then use the bell on My List. Recently Viewed is just what you opened lately, not your Favourites.
- Put alerts on staples whose price swings.
- Check alerts and Today's deals before you shop.
- No claim here of a push, phone notification or ping.
Today's deals: check the claim before you leave
Open Today's deals on the home screen under Today's Best Deals and read the was-price next to the sticker. On one home screen capture, Coles Beach Road Naturals shows $1 was $10, and Oral B Pro100 shows $8 was $56. Those are the numbers on the screen that day. They are not a promise for your suburb tomorrow.
Use Today's deals to decide what deserves a favourite or an alert. A loud badge on a product you never buy is noise. A real drop on a staple you already favourite is a reason to open the list.
Live prices need a connection. Check while you have signal, then take the list into the aisle. The shelf can differ from the screen, so re-check in store before you buy.
- Glance at Today's deals before you head out.
- Read the was-price, not only the badge.
- Live prices need a connection.
One list: put the winners where you shop
Put this week's favourites on one shopping list. The store counts then tell you how many lines land at Woolworths, Coles and ALDI before you leave home, so you know which shop the trip needs. On one My List screen, Woolworths and Coles lines sat side by side with their totals, with the Favourites tab up top.
When you want the same product across stores, live cross-store comparison is the tool. Price history helps when a special needs a longer look.
For the weekly repurchase habit on a longer watchlist angle, read how to track grocery prices with a watchlist. For unit-price maths on pack sizes, read how to use unit prices to find the cheapest groceries.
- One shopping list for the week.
- Live Compare Stores and price history when you need them.
- Favourites, alerts and Today's deals feed the same list.
What Discount Trolley does (and does not) claim
Discount Trolley helps you check available grocery price information for the lines you care about. It does not promise savings, crown a forever cheapest staple, or cover all products at all stores. Live prices need a connection. The shelf can differ from the screen.
We are not affiliated with Woolworths, Coles, ALDI or Priceline. Priceline prices are the catalogue prices Priceline publishes online, and franchise shelf prices can differ.
We stick to what Discount Trolley actually does here. Price alerts is the in-app feature name, and we do not claim a push when a favourite moves.
- No invented savings or rankings.
- No push, phone notification or ping claim.
- No affiliation with supermarket chains.
