Food prices Australia CPI August 2026: food annual cooled to 3.0%

Food prices Australia CPI August 2026: ABS says Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 3.0% annually (from 3.2% in July) and fell 0.1% in the month. All groups CPI rose 4.0% over 12 months. Use one Discount Trolley list, unit price and live Compare Stores to check your own lines, not a national average.

Food prices Australia CPI August 2026: what ABS measured

Food prices are still going up, just not as fast. That is the short version of the ABS Consumer Price Index for August 2026, released on 30 September, with meals out and takeaway doing most of the lifting. Here is what the ABS measured, and then how to check the lines you actually buy before your next shop.

That is a national average across the CPI basket. It does not tell you which supermarket is cheapest for your suburb, and it does not invent a household dollar saving for your next shop. The useful next step is checking the lines you actually buy.

We make Discount Trolley, so the bias is obvious. Search current prices, read the unit price, check Today's deals and keep your list, then compare stores live, scan barcodes, check price history and let Smart Swap suggest a cheaper comparable pack. Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, IGA, Harris Farm, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse where data is available. Not affiliated with those stores. The shelf can differ from the screen. Live prices need a connection.

CPI is the average. Your list is the check.
  • ABS: all groups CPI +4.0% over 12 months to August 2026.
  • ABS: food and non-alcoholic beverages +3.0% annual (from 3.2% in July), monthly -0.1%.
  • ABS: meals out and takeaway +4.1% annual (main food contributor).
  • National CPI is not your trolley. Check the lines you buy.

Put your own food lines on one list before you leave home

A cooled food CPI headline still leaves you with milk, bread, fruit and the pantry staples your house finishes. Put those lines on one Discount Trolley list while you have signal. On a mid September 2026 My List screen (not a CPI chart), the app showed a $15.25 total, a $57.00 savings badge, Woolworths (1), Coles (2) and ALDI (0), a Woolworths Minions Fleece Throw Rug at $6.25 marked Unavailable, and a Coles Beach Road Naturals Paw Paw Extract at $1.00 was $10.00. That is the prep shape: one list, store counts before you leave, and Unavailable failing the trip early.

When you get to the aisle, those ticks still tell you what to pick up. They do not replace a live price check you skipped at home. Live prices need a connection. Discount Trolley does not ship an offline supermarket catalogue.

For comparing a whole basket on one list, read compare grocery prices Australia. For a weekly routine after the CPI glance, see how to use Discount Trolley before your weekly shop.

One list. Real food lines. Then the aisle.
  • One list with the food lines you actually finish.
  • Store pills show Woolworths, Coles and ALDI counts before you leave.
  • Unavailable lines fail the trip before you stand at an empty shelf.

Unit price and live Compare Stores beat a national average

CPI says food cooled a little nationally. Unit price tells you whether the pack you buy is cheap today. On a Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Shampoo for Frizzy Hair 375mL product page, Discount Trolley showed Woolworths at $10.00 and unit price $2.67 per 100mL. Do the same cents-per-size check on the food sizes you buy. The Pantene figures just show how unit price works; they are not a food price or a CPI saving.

When you need a live store check on the same product, open Compare Stores. On one Oral B Pro100 product page, the Coles special looked unbeatable, but Compare Stores said not available at ALDI or Priceline. Use the same check when the question is the same food SKU across stores, then keep the tick on the list you will walk.

For unit price as a weekly habit, read how to use unit prices to find the cheapest groceries. For catalogues versus a live list, read supermarket price comparison Australia. For rising grocery prices habits without this ABS month, see grocery prices rising how to save.

Average is a headline. Unit price is the check.
  • Read the unit price before the shelf ticket.
  • Compare Stores when you want the same product at another chain.
  • ABS percentages are not a forever cheapest supermarket crown.

When price history helps after a CPI read

Today's deals, unit prices and one list cover most weekly shops. If a was-price looks too good, price history shows how low that product has really been, and Compare Stores or Smart Swap help when the choice is close.

For spotting theatrical specials, read how to spot a fake supermarket special. For a price-history habit when tags look theatrical, see the price gouging law grocery price check guide. For a watchlist habit on staples you repurchase, read how to track grocery prices.

Read CPI. Check your list. Then shop.
  1. Start with Today's deals, ordinary unit prices and one food list.
  2. Then open live Compare Stores, price history, scanning or Smart Swap when the choice is close.
  3. Confirm on the shelf. No app should promise the screen always matches the ticket.

What Discount Trolley does (and does not) claim after CPI day

Discount Trolley helps you check available grocery price information for the lines on your own list. It does not guarantee savings, prove which supermarket is cheapest from CPI, invent aisle badges for every layout, or ship a full offline supermarket catalogue. Live prices need a connection. The shelf can differ from the screen. Re-check in store before you buy.

We are not affiliated with Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, Priceline, Amazon or Apple. Priceline prices are the catalogue prices Priceline publishes online, and franchise shelf prices can differ.

When store totals disagree, decide with trip cost. For which supermarket is cheapest for your basket (not from CPI), read Woolworths vs Coles vs ALDI which supermarket is cheapest. For splitting a shop across two stores, see should you split your grocery shop across two stores.

  • No invented household dollar saving from CPI.
  • No forever cheapest supermarket crown from CPI.
  • No affiliation with the supermarket chains.

Questions shoppers still ask

What did the August 2026 CPI show for food prices?

Slower, not cheaper. Food and non-alcoholic beverages were up 3.0% on a year earlier, down from 3.2% in July, and eased 0.1% in the month. Meals out and takeaway, up 4.1%, drove most of it. That is a national average from the ABS release on 30 September 2026. To see what it means for your shop, check your own list in Discount Trolley.

Does a cooler food CPI mean my grocery shop is cheaper?

Not automatically. CPI is a national average across the basket. Your trip still depends on the brands and sizes you buy, your suburb, and live shelf prices. Put those lines on one list and check unit price before you treat the headline as a saving.

Can Discount Trolley tell me which supermarket is cheapest from CPI?

No. CPI does not crown a forever cheapest supermarket for your trolley. Discount Trolley helps you check available prices and unit prices for the lines on your own list across Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, IGA, Harris Farm, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse where data is available.

What does live cross-store comparison show?

Compare Stores puts the same product side by side at the other stores, so you can see where it costs less and where it is not stocked. Check pack size and unit price, then confirm the shelf price before you buy.

Do I need a connection to check prices after reading CPI?

Yes for live prices. Discount Trolley does not ship an offline supermarket catalogue. Check prices while you have signal, then use the list in the aisle. Confirm on the shelf before you buy.

Which stores does Discount Trolley cover?

Seven Australian stores: Woolworths, Coles, ALDI, IGA, Harris Farm, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse where data is available. Availability and price can differ by suburb, and the shelf can differ from the screen.
